IMPRESS YOUR SMART DATE

By A.R. Brook Lynn

Is your Valentine’s Day date smarter than you? Being an idiot, you might think that your erudite valentine would enjoy a lecture or a foreign film. While this might be true, take the little scholar somewhere you both can enjoy. Fat Cat pool hall (75 Christopher St. at 7th Ave.) is just the ticket. Impress your sweetheart by taking in a Saul Rubin session in the jazz room, and don’t forget to bob your head up and down while you listen—that’s how brainy people get down, and he or she will think you’re really feeling the music. After the set is over, play a game of chess or backgammon. (Be sure to preface your match by claiming you never found strategy games worthwhile, which will get you off the hook for losing.) Choose any beer from Fat Cat’s extensive selection to give you something to do with your mouth while you let your date speak. Not only will you prevented yourself from saying something stupid, but by listening you might actually learn something. When you have had just about enough of all this and have fed smarty-pants enough beer and wine to loosen him or her up, play a game of pool or ping pong—Fat Cat accommodates all kinds.
